One of the most important bonding sessions between babies and mothers is during feeding. Not only when breastfeeding, although that’s obvious, it’s also when feeding baby solids. You may think your baby is fine  the doctor said so and so does the weighing scale. But all that will quickly come crashing down when your child meets his grandparents. Suddenly you feel like he or she is grossly underweight.

After getting the hang of breastfeeding, weight gain in babies is one of the biggest challenges faced by new Moms, and this problem can extend well into toddlerhood and even into the school years. It could be that the baby’s weight does not meet the mother’s self-made expectations of how much her baby should weight. Many Moms whose babies look healthy, feed well and reach all their milestones properly still unnecessarily worry about their baby’s weight. In most cases, the perceived lack of weight gain is usually purely superfluous and nothing of any concern. The child’s weight should be considered across months and a slight drop from one month to the next does not require any attention. Besides, the baby’s weight also depends upon the genetic constitution of the parents.

You can consider keeping a food diary for your child and make a note of likes, dislikes, preferences and allergies and prepare weekly menus to make mealtimes fun and tantrum-free. he initial years of life are important to build healthy eating habits in kids. When you introduce your child to healthy food habits at an early age, they are likely to stay with her for life. The only way to know if your baby is not gaining enough weight is through regular weigh-ins and check-ups. It is also recommended that you monitor his stools, urine and feeding habits and make a note of them. If there are any irregularities, it is advisable to consult your physician.

Best Food for Gaining Weight in Babies

  1. Breast Milk:

Breast milk is the best source of weight gain for babies till one year. Follow the WHO recommendation of breastfeeding your baby exclusively for the first six months and frequently after that. Breast milk is a super food itself and hence you can keep giving it. Breast milk helps to fulfill the fat and energy requirements of a baby. When breastfeeding, make sure you empty one breast completely before moving to the next. This is because the milk the baby gets at the beginning of the feeding is the thinner fore milk and the fat-rich hind milk comes after that.  If your baby is active, looks healthy, is free of allergies, passes 4-6 stools a day and wets 6-8 diapers, it indicates that she is getting enough breast milk.

  1. Whole Cream Milk:

Whole cream milk can help your baby to put on weight. It is power packed with calcium and loaded with calories. It also is rich in essential vitamins and minerals.

  1. Banana:

This fruit is rich in potassium, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6 and carbohydrates. It is also loaded with calories, making it a great food for your baby to eat to gain weight. Mash bananas or serve them in a smoothie or shake. Being an energy dense fruit makes it ideal for helping babies gain weight, and it also provides dietary fiber, potassium as well as other minerals and vitamins. Steamed bananas can be mashed and fed to babies for great results. It can be a part of your baby bag while travelling and makes for a convenient snack. After 8 months it can be given as pancakes or mixed in porridge, or you can try out one of these banana recipes for babies under one year.

  1. Ragi:

Ragi is a traditional baby food that’s quite popular in South India. It is easily digestible and can be introduced to babies in the form of idli, dosa, porridge, malt, or cereals. Toddlers can have the same in the form of their favorite cakes, cookies, and puddings.  While being rich in protein and calcium it is also one of the best weight gaining foods for babies. Ragi is also a good source of dietary fiber, protein and Vitamins B1, B2 and B6.

  1. Sweet potatoes:

Sweet potatoes are easy to boil and mash. They are tasty, nutritious, easy to digest, and healthy. They are also rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, copper, phosphorus, potassium and manganese  the best nutrients to help kids gain weight.

  1. Soy milk:

If you belong to a vegetarian household or if your little one is lactose intolerant then you can give your child soy milk. It is rich in proteins and calories and will help your child gain weight.

  1. Ghee:

A few drops of ghee can be added to porridge or sprinkled on top of mashed khichdi or daal soup. Homemade ghee from milk or malai (cream) is the best option for you if you are worried about adulteration. It is a great food to help your baby gain weight in a healthy way.

  1. Dry fruits:

Almonds, pistachios, walnuts, apricots, cashews, raisins and seeds like sesame, pumpkin, flax, etc., provide kids with adequate nutrients to gain weight.  Powder them and add to your child’s milk or sprinkle the powder on top of cereals. You can also simply give them a handful of nuts and seeds to eat.

  1. Fruits and Vegetables:

Papaya, mangoes and pineapples toss steamed vegetables in some butter or put together a colorful fruit salad for your child to tuck into at snack-time. Rich in natural sugars, essential vitamins, and immunity-building minerals, tropical fruits and vegetables are a must in every child’s diet chart.

Sometimes, kids refuse to eat. Don’t force-feed your child or get angry. Patience is key you will have to try introducing the food on some other day or in some other way. It is recommended that you talk to your doctor to see if your baby is malnourished or has any underlying issue that’s causing him to put on weight very slowly. There is however no need to panic as there are numerous ways to combat poor weight gain in infant.
