Tonsils are fragments of the human body. The primary function of this body part is trapping infectious particles inhaled inside our bodies and transmitting them to the lymphatic system to expel it from the body via the immune system. The term tonsillitis refers to inflammation of the tonsils. The tonsils are two oval-shaped glands that sit at the back of the throat. Their role is to fight off bacteria and viruses that enter the body through the nose and mouth.

Swollen tonsils, also known as tonsillitis in medical terms, are a phenomenon that causes swelling in 2 lymph nodes in 2 sides inside your neck. Every person can get this disease, but it is particularly common in childhood.

Home treatment for Tonsils

1. Salt Water:

The best and most well-known home remedy for tonsillitis is to do gargling with warm salt water. “The warm water will have a soothing effect and the salt will help kill the infection or bacteria. Plus, salt helps reduce inflammation, giving you instant relief. Salt water works as a mild antiseptic solution that may help soothe the irritated and swollen walls of your throat while combating the virus or bacteria at the source of the infection.
• Mix one teaspoon of table salt in a cup of warm water.
• Gargle with the solution. Do not swallow it. Spit the water out after gargling.
• Repeat this as often as possible for speedy recovery.

2. Increase your fluid intake:

Tonsillitis can irritate the lining of your throat and make it feel increasingly scratchy, parched, and sore. Moreover, the swollen tonsils can make it extra hard for you to gulp down fluids, which can render you dehydrated over time. Keeping your body well hydrated is fundamental to the recovery process. In fact, you must consume more fluids than usual to help your body fight the infection better.

3. Tulsi:

Tulsi or Holy Basil, is another exceptionally viable home remedy for tonsillitis because of its antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition to that, its healing and soothing qualities will help reduce swelling and pain as well as speed up the healing process. The essential oils in tulsi are known for its antibacterial property, which helps to prevent the bacterial attack on the tonsils and helps to build your immunity from virus and bacteria.
• Add 10 to 12 basil leaves to one and one-half cups of water.
• Boil for 10 minutes.
• Strain and add the juice from one lemon to the solution. Optionally, add one teaspoon of honey to sweeten it or 2 grams of black pepper to spice it up.
• Drink this three times a day for two to three days.

4. Apple cider vinegar:

Apple cider vinegar is acidic and the antibacterial and antiviral properties of apple cider vinegar kill the bacteria which attacks the tonsils. The acidic nature of apple cider vinegar also soothes your sore throat by forming a coat around the linings of your throat and tonsils.
• Mix one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with one cup of water.
• Gargle with the mixture twice a day for 2 to 3 days.

5. Cinnamon:

Cinnamon can be used for treating tonsillitis. “Being rich in antimicrobial properties, cinnamon represses the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms in the tonsils and helps reduce swelling, pain and inflammation.
• Add one teaspoon of cinnamon powder to a glass of hot water.
• Mix in two teaspoons of honey.
• Sip on it slowly while it is still warm.
• Drink this two or three times a day for one week.

6. Turmeric:

Turmeric due to its strong anti-inflammatory and antiseptic qualities, can also fight off tonsillitis infection and relieve irritation symptoms.
Ayurveda recommends using 1 cup of hot water (not so hot that it might burn your throat) with 1/2 teaspoon turmeric and 1/2 teaspoon salt mixed in. Gargle with this mixture morning and evening.

7. Eat Cold foods:

Patients with tonsillitis are often advised to eat frozen foods such as ice cream, popsicles, and ice pops to soothe their irritated throat. However, having cold desserts that contain a lot of sugar can be counterproductive.

• sipping ice cold water.

8. Fenugreek:

Fenugreek, also known as methi, has antibacterial properties that make it an excellent remedy for tonsillitis as it can fight against the bacteria responsible for tonsillitis. Plus, the anti-inflammatory properties present in fenugreek will give you instant relief from pain and inflammation.
• Add two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds to two to three cups of water.
• Allow to simmer for 30 minutes.
• Strain and let it cool.
• Gargle with this water for at least 30 seconds, and then spit it out.
• Repeat twice daily until you get comfort.

9. Ginger:

Gingerols and shogaols present in the ginger help to relieve sore throat and tonsils. The anti-inflammatory properties of ginger help to reduce the swelling of your tonsils due to the inflammation.
• Cut a few pieces of fresh ginger and add these pieces to the regular tea.
• Allow it to steep for a few minutes.
• Consume the mixture.
• Optional – add a teaspoon of honey to improve the taste.

10. Figs:

Fresh figs contain phenolic compounds in high quantity. The anti-inflammatory properties of figs relieve the pain and inflammation caused due to tonsillitis. The high mucilage content in figs makes them an ideal food to eat at the time of pain and inflammation due to tonsillitis.

11. Avoiding hard foods:

Hard foods may scratch the throat, leading to further irritation and inflammation. Foods to avoid include:
• chips
• crackers
• dry cereal
• toast
• raw carrots

12. Increasing indoor humidity:

Dry air can further irritate a sore throat. People with tonsillitis may benefit from using a cool mist humidifier. These devices release moisture back into the air, helping alleviate throat discomfort.

13. Resting the voice:

Speaking (or even whispering) when your throat is swollen puts strain on the vocal cords, increasing irritation. The best thing to do is give your voice a rest, speaking as little as possible.

14. Baking soda:

Baking soda has a long history of being used at home for many purposes, from cleaning to basic first aid. It is beneficial for preventing strep throat – a cause of swollen tonsils.
Combine one teaspoon of baking soda with a ½ cup of lukewarm water
Swish this solution once a day.

These home remedies should help your child feel better and, with a little luck, their tonsillitis will clear up in a few days.
