Home Remedies for Joint pain

An Overview

Joint pain is one of the most commonly reported health condition, with one in five adults of 18-44 years of age, 30% of adults between 45-64 years and about half of the adults aged 65-74 years and over suffering from this discomfort, as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Arthritis Foundation says joint pain related to arthritis is most likely to develop in one or more of the following areas, like the neck and top of the back/spine, jaw, knees, hips, the lower back, back of the legs, shoulders (the ball and socket joints), wrists, hands, fingers, ankles, feet, heels and toes.

The pain may emanate from tendons or bursa surrounding the joint, or ligaments, cartilage and bone within the joint itself. It may represent joint inflammation as well.

Home remedies for Joint Pain

  1. Turmeric and ginger tea:

Turmeric and ginger are both anti-inflammatory and will help with onset and rheumatoid arthritis. Turmeric in particular has gotten a lot of attention lately. Its active ingredient is something called cur cumin, which is a powerful antioxidant.

  1. Massage the affected area:

Massage can help control pain, increase joint motion, and improve muscle and tendon flexibility. Moreover, massage therapy helps relieve joint pain by improving circulation and soothing inflammation. To massage the affected joint area, use warm oil like coconut, olive, mustard, castor or garlic oil and apply gentle pressure while massaging.

  1. Apply Cold and Hot Therapy:

Heat therapy helps decrease pain, increase blood flow and relax sore muscles and joints. Cold therapy, on the other hand, reduces inflammation and numbs the areas around the affected joint.

  1. Take some ice cubes and a hot water bottle.
  2. Wrap both compresses in separate towels before using them. They should not be applied directly to the skin.
  3. Place the hot compress on the affected area for about three minutes.
  4. Remove the compress and immediately put a cold compress in its place for about one minute.
  5. Repeat the process for 15 to 20 minutes, a few times daily until you get relief.
  6. Epsom salt Soak:

Epsom salt contains magnesium sulfate which sounds kind of scary, but it’s really quite a wonderful substance. A naturally occurring mineral, magnesium sulfate has been used to get relief from pain for years, namely because of its high levels of magnesium.

  1. Mix two cups of Epsom salt in warm bath water.
  2. Soak in it for about 20 minutes.
  3. Repeat three times a week until you get relief from your joint pain.

   7. Drink Turmeric Milk:

Turmeric is an excellent Ayurvedic remedy for joint pain. It contains an active ingredient called curcumin with potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Mix one teaspoon of turmeric powder and a little honey in a glass of warm milk. Drink it daily, at least for a few days.

  8. Dab Olive Oil to the Affected Surface:

Olive oil is beneficial for reducing pain and inflammation in the joints.

  • For topical use, massage the painful joint area with warm olive oil, 2-3 times a day.
  • For consumption, eat 1 to 2 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil on a daily basis to fight inflammation from within.

   9.  Lubricate With Extra Virgin Olive Oil:

The very consistency of olive oil makes it seem like something that would lubricate your joints and ease arthritis pain, and it turns out, it actually does. A main compound in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) called oleocanthal inhibits inflammatory enzymes COX-1 and COX-2, just like Advil or aspirin does.

   10. Blackstrap molasses drink:

Blackstrap molasses is what remains after the 3rd boiling of sugar syrup, and is nothing like the nutrient lacking refined sugars used today. Directions
Heat 1 cup of fresh water until warm, but not hot. Stir in a tablespoon of blackstrap molasses and drink once daily. Do note that it can sometimes have a laxative effect.

  11. Get more Magnesium:

Magnesium is something our bodies need, but we can’t make it ourselves. It is used in over 300 different biomechanical responses in our body. It relaxes all our muscles and nerve endings, relieving stiffness and pain. It is even part of what makes our heart beat. Not only does it relax muscles and ease pain.

  12. Consume Fenugreek Seeds:

Owing to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, fenugreek has emerged as a popular ingredient for treating joint pains at home. It is particularly beneficial for those suffering from arthritis.

  • Consume one teaspoon of finely ground fenugreek seeds followed by a glass of lukewarm water every morning to reap its benefits and continue following this remedy until you get satisfactory results.
  • Alternatively, you can simply soak one teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in water overnight and eat them the next morning.
  • You can also massage the affected joint area with fenugreek oil.

  13.  Try Acupuncture Technique:

It uses thin needles to stimulate certain points in the body to relieve symptoms. This follows that acupuncture helps palliate pain by stimulating the release of natural pain-fighting endorphins. The effectiveness of acupuncture can be gauged by the fact it is recommended by the World Health Organization for the treatment of over 100 different conditions.

  14. Exercise:

Exercise will help control weight (an excess of which puts more strain on your joints) strengthens the muscles that support the joint, even when the cartilage is thinning, and lubricates the joints, allowing them to move more freely. Aquatic exercises can be beneficial for people with arthritis. Water provides resistance, which helps increase exercise intensity. At the same time, the buoyancy that the water provides helps support body weight, relieving pressure on the joints.

  • Going for a brisk walk-start with 15 minutes and work your way up into a solid daily routine.
  • Doing joint-targeted exercises-certain stretches and exercises specifically target joints to help rid them of stiffness and pain.

  15. Apple cider vinegar:

Apple cider vinegar is rich in potassium. We all know if the body lack potassium, the joints will become hard and inflammatory. High levels of potassium in apple cider vinegar help remove toxins from the body to maintain joint flexibility.

  • You can use topical pain relievers or take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation.
  • The cooling sensation that they produce can temporarily override your discomfort, and create a soothing sensation that can ease the pain of arthritis.
