Vision problems are quickly becoming a common disease in this day and age. With an exponential increase in the number of hours we spend in front of a screen, the phenomenon comes as no surprise. Even children are spending more time in front of computer or TV straining their eyes for no reason. First of all, the weakness of eyesight can be used to imply both nearsightedness and farsightedness. Such factors as lack of nutrition, excessive strain for eyes, genetics as well as aging are all contributors to the condition of weak eyesight.

1. Eye Exercises:

Eye exercises make your eye muscles more flexible, and bring energy and blood flow to the eyes to maintain optimal vision. Regular eye exercises combat eye strain and also improve focus as well as concentration. Exercise your eyes regularly can also help fight against eye strain while improving concentration as well as focus.

  • Hold a pencil at an arm’s length and focus on it. Slowly bring it closer to your nose and then move it farther from your vision until you can no longer keep it in focus. Repeat about 10 times a day or Roll your eyes in the clockwise direction for a few seconds, and then roll them counter-clockwise for a few seconds. Repeat four or five times, blinking your eyes in between each set.
  •  Concentrate your vision on a distant object for a while. The best way to do this without straining your eyes is to look at the moon and focus on it for three to five minutes daily.
  •  Focus the vision of on an object in a distance for some time. The most recommended method to perform this exercise is gazing the moon and have your focus on it for at least 5 minutes every day.

2. Stimulate your eye muscles:

It basically involves stimulating your eye muscles. This technique is simple, but must be done every morning. On waking up, wash your face with water (preferably cool or a little cold water). Then fill your mouth with water, close your eyes and splash cold water onto your eyes. It stimulates the muscles of the eyes, due to the pressure exerted by the water filled in your mouth. The splash of cold water on your face helps enliven the nerve endings and rejuvenates the skin.

3. Sunning and palming:

Sunning and palming are also beneficial for eyes as these methods help reactivate and flex the eye lens and ciliary muscles.

  •  For sunning, allow the sun to shine directly on your closed eyelids while breathing deeply. Do this once daily for a few minutes, followed by palming.
    • For palming, rub your palms together to generate heat and then gently cup your palms over your closed eyes without applying pressure on the eyes.

4. Massage over worked eyes:

This is a great exercise for people who work for long hours in front of computers. Hold your eyebrows between your thumb and index finger, in such a way that the thumb is above the eyebrow and index finger below. Now, gently press and straighten your eyebrows, exerting gentle pressure on all the points. Then, take your thumb and gently roll it around your eye ball, i.e: along your eye socket.

5. Acupressure/acupuncture:

There are various acupressure/acupuncture points around the orbits of the eyes, which are the bones that surround the eyeballs.

  • Walking barefoot on grass in the morning dew for about 30 minutes is also considered an acupuncture method to help improve eyesight as it activates the nerve fibers connected to your feet. There are reflexology pressure points for the eyes on the second and third toes. Plus, the green color of the grass is soothing for the eyes.

6. Give your eyes some much needed rest:

This technique has been practiced in Ayurveda for a number of years. Later picked up by optometrist Dr Bates, it was named palming. To do this, rub the palms of both your hands for 30 seconds till you feel warm between the two palms then place them gently over the eyes. Hold this position for about one minute or till the heat decreases. Slowly open your eyes.

7. Bilberry:

Bilberry is another popular herb for vision and eye heath. It can also help improve night vision as it stimulates the regeneration of the visual purple component of the retina. Plus, it protects against macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts. It is also good for retinal problems related to diabetes or high blood pressure as it is high in a chemical called antidemocratic that has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Eat about one-half cup of ripe bilberry fruits daily.
  • You can also take bilberry supplements, after consulting your doctor. Generally, it is advised to take 160 mg of bilberry extract (with 25 percent anthropocentric) two times a day, a few times a week.

8. Diet for healthy, stress free eyes:

Apart from all the exercises you perform your diet is an essential aid to the repair and renewal process. Almonds, raisins and figs are elixirs for the eyes. To help them cope with the demands of your day-to-day activities with this home remedy.

  • Soak six to ten almonds, fifteen raisins and two anjeer overnight in some water.
  • Cup of carrot and amla juice, on an empty stomach in the morning. Carrot and amla have a lot of vitamin A and are store houses of antioxidants that help beat the ill effects of oxidative stress in the body.
  • Include foods rich in vitamin A into your daily diet. Foods like carrots, green leafy vegetables, amla, oranges, anjeer or fig and almonds are packed with this essential vitamin.

9. Almonds:

This nut contains abundance of omega-3 fatty acids as well as antioxidant and vitamin E which is why it is able to make the list of home remedies to improve eyesight. It is totally capable of enhancing concentration together with memory.

  • Take 5 – 10 almonds to soak in water through the night.
  •  Next morning, have them peeled off the skin and grinded.
  •  Consume the almond paste together with some warm milk.
