You use your arms for just about everything, such as lifting, holding, grabbing, and throwing. Pain in any part of your arms can debilitate you by preventing you from carrying out your daily activities on your own. Arms are part of the upper extremities of the body. These are built of a network of bones, muscles, joints, nerves, blood vessels, and tendons. The arms extend from the shoulder joint to the joint located on your wrists. Pain in the arm can be engendered by an injury, infection, or other conditions. Sore or painful arms are common but should not be taken lightly. Older adults are likely to have pain in the arm as a result of loss in muscle mass. Being physically active, children may often experience arm pain.

Symptoms of Arm Pain

The symptoms can be in one or both arms and can affect the wrist, elbow, and shoulder. Aside from pain, other symptoms associated with arm problems include:

• Swollen lymph nodes under the arm

Causes of Arm Pain

Depending on the cause, the pain may start suddenly and go away or it may increase gradually.
Mild pain in the arms is usually the result of:
• Poor sleeping position
• Poor blood circulation
• Exercising or playing sports
• Repetitive motion of the arm
• Heart attack
• Elbow and wrist injuries

Some possible causes of severe arm pain include:

• A pinched nerve such as in carpal tunnel syndrome
• Sprain
• Shoulder injuries such as rotator cuff tear, shoulder instability, or other problems
• Skeletal muscle injury
• Broken bone
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Angina

Tennis elbow: Tennis elbow is a condition that leads to swelling and pain within your elbow. Such swelling can be as a result of excessive usage of the right arm and elbow joint. The pain can be felt from the outside of the elbow, but sometimes it can extend to the back of your forearm, making the whole arm painful. The pain increases when you extend or straighten your arm.
Broken Right Arm: A broken arm involves one or more of your three arm bones: the humerus, radius, and ulna. Your arm can break when you fall on an overstretched hand. A broken arm can result in severe pain in the right arm for an extended period of time.
Thoracic outlet syndrome: This is also another condition that can lead to pain in the right arm. Thoracic outlet syndrome is a general term used to describe multiple conditions leading to shooting pain in right arm. Cubital tunnel syndrome is also called ulnar nerve entrapment, and is known to occur when the ulnar nerve, one of the biggest nerves in the upper extreme of the body, is compressed as it goes through the cubital tunnel located in the elbow.

  1. Keep moving. Maintain movement in your joints as best you can. This can help keep your joints functioning better for a longer amount of time and, at the same time, brighten your outlook on life. Walking, gardening, and even housecleaning can help your joints.
  2. Apply Cold Compress
    Arm pain can be treated with cold compresses. However, it is effective primarily during the initial stage.
    The cold temperature helps make the tissue in the painful area numb, therefore alleviating the pain. It also helps reduce inflammation.
  3. Exercise, exercise, exercise. There are different types of exercises that are used to help arthritis sufferers. The simplest, easiest exercises that can and should be done by almost any arthritis sufferer every day are called range-of-motion exercises. These flexibility exercises help maintain good movement by putting the joints through their full range of motion. They can help reduce the risk of joint injury, and they provide a great warm-up for more rigorous exercise.
  4. Wrap It Up with a BandageWrapping the affected area with a compression bandage or elastic bandage can help reduce swelling and encourage healing.
  5. Compression puts even pressure on the painful area. Also, it gives ample support to your painful arm. Furthermore, it helps you move around more comfortably.
  6. Give your hands a water workout. Try doing your hand exercises in a sink full of warm water for added ease and comfort.
  7. Drink Ginger Tea: Ginger has been documented as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. These properties can help heal arm pain. It helps eliminate inflammation of any type, including in the arm and shoulder. It also boosts blood circulation to speed up the healing process.

1. Warm up a little sesame, mustard, coconut, or olive oil for a few seconds in the microwave.
2. Rub the warm oil on the painful part of your arm.
3. Massage the area gently using a little pressure to increase blood circulation and relieve the pain.
4. Do this a few times a day for several days.

Play in a pool. If you find even simple movements difficult, a heated pool or whirlpool may be the perfect environment for exercise (unless you are pregnant, in which case you should avoid heated whirlpools and hot tubs, or have other chronic health problems, in which case you should get your doctor’s approval first.
