Food we eat in fasting

People fast for many reasons health, before surgery, religious or to lose weight. When you fast, enzymes in the digestive system are diminished. To build these back up, you need to eat carefully to allow your body time to recover

There are many types of fasting diets, and each one has its own rules about what you can or cannot drink. While most diets allow for an assortment of foods, partial fasting diets may restrict the type of food you’re allowed to eat or drink. As well in a dry fast, not even water is allowed, which is considered essential for all of fasts.

Drink Water
Other than dry fasting, where no liquids or solids are consumed, water is essential for all fasts, including juice fasting. While MedlinePlus recommends drinking a minimum of six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water, you need to drink more while fasting. Jennifer Thompson, author of “Water Fasting” recommends drinking an additional 1/2 ounce of water per pound of body weight. The recommendation may increase if you are exposed to hot weather or if you are participating in strenuous exercise while fasting.

Whole Foods and a Normal Diet
Starting on day three or four, incorporate other whole cooked foods, such as whole grains; nuts; and raw vegetables and fruits. Keep your grains and legumes well cooked, so that they are soft and easy to digest. On day five, you can start incorporating non-cultured dairy products into your diet, such as milk, as well as eggs and meats. Make low-fat food choices. so, you do not shock your system. Like with the fresh juices and cooked veggies, organic foods are not necessary, although they are recommended.

Dried fruits: dried fruits that provide sugar and fiber, like dried apricots or raisins, are good fast-breaking foods as well.

Eat healthy food: fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lentils, healthy fats and lean protein.

Raw vegetables or Vegetable juice: Raw organic vegetables and juiced vegetables should follow your fruit. By juicing veggies, you’ll release nutrients that your body can access readily. The extra water will help as well. Try a glass of fresh carrot juice with a shot of celery or beet juice. If you’d like something solid.. follow juice with a small salad.

Other Liquids
Freshly made juices or light, low-fat broths and non-caffeinated teas are allowed when you’re on a juice fast or partial fast. For a juice fast, fresh juices should be made with a juicer to remove as much insoluble fiber as possible and to give your digestive system a rest. Broths should contain no solid and as little fat as possible. Teas are allowed on all juice and partial fasts, though caffeine-free choices such as decaffeinated teas and herbal teas are preferred.
Cooked Foods
It might seem counter-intuitive, but some fasts allow for cooked foods. Partial fasts allow for cooked foods with some restrictions, such as eating only cooked brown rice, or intermittent fasting, where you are only allowed to eat during restricted times. In general, eating low-fat, low-sodium foods like vegetables, fruits and whole-grains are recommended. To get cooked foods in drinkable form, puree cooked foods with a little bit of water.

Broth: Broth is a thin soup made from vegetables or bones, herbs and some salt simmered in water. Broth may contain chunks of vegetables or meat.

Eggs:Coddled eggs show up in old cookbooks as excellent invalid food, so adding eggs to your post-fasting meals is a good idea. In fact, to coddle (pamper) may come from the cooking of coddled eggs.
Whole eggs are high in protein, vitamins, anti-oxidants and minerals. Eat a boiled or poached egg post-fast for a quick shot of healthy nutrients.

Sprouts: If you grow sprouts, try a small bowl of mixed sprouts like sunflower, buckwheat, alfalfa, chickpeas, broccoli, lentil, adzuki beans, cabbage, and mung bean. It takes a couple days to sprout seeds so, plan ahead to break your fast with these.

Fasting can be hard on your body, so if you are pregnant or already suffering from malnutrition, don’t fast. If you have heart, liver or kidney problems, talk to your doctor first. If you take any medication, talk to your doctor before fasting
