Benefits of Dried ginger ( Sonth )

An Overview

Sonth is obtained from the underground stem of the main ginger (adrak) plant which is a member of the family of plants that includes cardamom and turmeric. When a freshly sourced piece of ginger is soaked in water for some time, peeled off and left to sun-dry for a few days, we get what is known as sonth.

In fact, ginger as it is remains one of the all-time favourite condiments in various Asian households. It is used as a flavouring agent in the kitchens for everyday cooking purposes, and also for enhancing the taste of the food.

Benefits of Dried ginger

1. Effective Home Remedies of Sonth for Joint Pain:

• Make a fine powder using sonth, nutmeg and some sesame oil (Til Taila). Apply it on to a bandage and place it on the affected area. The combined relieving effect of sonth, sesame and nutmeg will soon start to surface.
• Add two to three teaspoons of sonth powder in water. Bring the water to boil, and allow it to cool for some time. Use this water for drinking purpose and watch the goodness of sonth wash down the joint pain. We can also add some jaggery to the boiling water, in order to make the solution more palatable.

2. Cures Chest pain:

Chest pain can be cured by using dry ginger powder. Mix dry ginger powder and sugar in tender coconut water. Drink it to cure chest pain.

3. Toner:

Boil two teaspoons of dry ginger powder in 4 cups of water. Reduce this till it becomes half. Strain and cool; now add few drops of lavender or rosemary oil. Mix all these ingredients well and store it in a glass bottle. Refrigerate this toner and apply with cotton on the face. This protects the skin, removes impurities, hydrates it, reduces dryness and tones it

Dried ginger powder can help you sweat, leading to decreased body temperature. This is especially effective when trying to get rid of a common cold or the flu. Also, sonth benefits in the removal of toxins from the body.

Dry ginger powder together with sugar cane juice is used to cure stomach irritation. Consume this mixture everyday early in the morning to get relief from stomach irritation

Ginger tea is the best remedy to lose weight. Add ½ teaspoon of dry ginger powder in a cup of hot water. Dissolve this properly and drink this everyday for weight loss. This tea can also be sweetened with honey if required.

• Mix dry ginger powder, a pinch of asafoetida and black salt in warm water to clear flatulence (10).
• Mix dry ginger powder with half a teaspoon of carom seeds and 2-3 drops of lemon juice. Make a thick paste and dry it in the shade. Consume 1 gm of this every morning and evening with salt to clear flatulence.

Dry ginger powder can be added to milk and sugar to get rid of urinary infections.

Take 50 gm of ginger powder and amla powder mixed together both and take on teaspoon of this powder mix in water, drink morning and evening to reduce obesity.

11. To Cure Throat Infection:

When there is throat infection and throat pain make the dried ginger into a paste and apply on the throat so that it will be cured.
As a kitchen Ingredient:
• Dried ginger is used in masalas and spices in the kitchen to make stews, curries, marinades and gravies.
• It is used in food made for lactating mothers and pregnant women.
• Dry ginger is also used to add flavour to different baked recipes like gingerbread, ginger candies and ginger cookies.

When the dried ginger powder is taken in one tumbler of water and boiled and added with milk and sugar or jaggery and drank as a coffee. This cures indigestion and diarrhea.

Preparation Instructions:
• Add 2-3 teaspoons of ginger powder in 3 glass of water.
• Boil it until it reduces to half.
• Cool and strain it.
• Now add some drops of rosemary oil.
• Mix it well and store in the refrigerator in a glass container.

16. Diabetes:

Ginger lowers lipid, cholesterol, and blood glucose levels. These properties have been confirmed in various clinical studies. Ginger juice is shown to reduces serum glucose levels in animals. For diabetic patients, including ginger in their daily diet reduces the chance of kidney damage associated with diabetes.

17. Common Cold:

Ginger powder is one of the common ingredients found in your kitchen which helps treat the symptoms of common cold (7).
• Consume raw ginger or powdered ginger tea several times a day to get relief from cold.
• You can also make a paste of dry ginger powder, clove and salt and consume this twice a day to cure cold symptoms.
• Another method to cure this is to mix dry ginger powder with jaggery to cure a running nose.

• Mix dry ginger powder, a pinch of asafoetida and black salt in warm water to clear flatulence.

19. To Cure Acidity:

Dried ginger tea along with the baking soda is mixed and eaten to cure the acidity. Also cures colic pain, pain in the bones, irritation in the chest, indigestion, stomach disorders, earache, headache, runny nose are cured.
