In this kind of treatment, you use extracts from plants called essential oils, by either breathing them through your nose or putting them on your skin. Some people put the oils on their skin when they get a massage or take a bath.

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are made from flower, herb, and tree parts, like bark, roots, peels, and petals. The cells that give a plant its fragrant smell are its “essence.” When an essence is extracted from a plant, it becomes an essential oil.

What do essential oils do?

• Bergamot essential oil is said to be useful for the urinary tract and digestive tract. When combined with eucalyptus oil it may help relieve skin problems, including those caused by stress and chicken pox.
• Black pepper essential oil is commonly used for stimulating the circulation, muscular aches and pains, and bruises. Combined with ginger essential oil, it is used to reduce arthritis pain and improve flexibility.
• Chamomile essential oil can treat eczema.
• Citronella essential oil is a relative of lemongrass and acts as an insect repellent.
• Clove essential oil is a topical analgesic, or painkiller, that is commonly used for toothache. It is also used as an antispasmodic antiemetic, for preventing vomiting and nausea, and as a carminative, preventing gas in the gut. It has antimicrobial, antioxidant and antifungal properties.

How Aromatherapy Works

  • Experts think aromatherapy activates areas in your nose called smell receptors, which send messages through your nervous system to your brain.
  • The oils may activate certain areas of your brain, like your limbic system, which plays a role in your emotions. They could also have an impact on your hypothalamus, which may respond to the oil by creating feel-good brain chemicals like serotonin.
  • Aromatherapy is sometimes used for insomnia, but we don’t know whether it’s helpful because little rigorous research has been done on this topic.
  • Aromatherapy is sometimes incorporated into massage therapy for various conditions, such as knee pain from osteoarthritis or pain, anxiety, and other symptoms in people with cancer.
    One study of aromatherapy using two contrasting scents, lemon and lavender, in people under stress found that lemon had a positive effect on mood but neither scent affected stress indicators, biochemical markers of immune system changes, or pain control.
  • Relieves Stress
    Perhaps the most widespread and popular use of aromatherapy is for stress relief. The aromatic compounds from many different essential oils are known as relaxants and can help soothe your mind and eliminate anxiety. This is what most people who perform aromatherapy at home use it for since the mixtures are very simple and the research on this aspect of aromatherapy is very well-known and widely studied.
  • Relieves Anxiety
    patients were given hand massages once a day for one week with an essential oil blend, which consisted of lavender, bergamot and frankincense. Patients reported less pain and depression, and results confirmed that massage with this essential oil blend has stronger healing power when it comes to pain and depression management compared to massage alone.
  • Managing Psychiatric Disorders
    Studies have also shown the efficacy of aromatherapy in managing a range of psychiatric disorders. Certain essential oils like lavender oil can help ease anxiety and enhance your mood (Karadag E et al., 2017). Peppermint oil and frankincense oil are known to help manage chronic pain, certain cognitive disorders, insomnia, and even depression.
  • Boost Energy
    The good news is there are essential oils that can invigorate the senses, and give you that pep in your step. All citrus oils, especially lemon, are filled with antioxidant terpenes such as limonene, which have naturally energizing effects.
  • Improves sleep
    In terms of effective sleep aids, essential oils are popular for their natural sedative properties. Lavender oil is scientifically-proven to promote restful sleep. Participants who inhaled lavender oil for 15 days showed significant improvements in their sleep quality compared to the control group that did not receive therapy.
  • Aromatherapy Aids in Digestion
    Aromatherapy can actually aid in the body’s digestive process.
    It can help ward off common digestion-related problems like bloating, flatulence, indigestion, and many more.
    Ginger, dill, fennel, chamomile, peppermint, lavender and clary sage are the essential oils to turn to when it comes to digestion issues.
    Many studies have proven that peppermint oil is a powerful remedy for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) [13, 14].
    In one of these clinical trials, 57 patients suffering from IBS were given either peppermint oil or a placebo for four weeks.
  • Aromatherapy May Promote Healing and Recovery: 

Essential oils are said to be “stimulants”, which means that they can promote healing in the body. Experts say that they work by increasing flow of blood and oxygen to skin injuries such as wounds and burns. They also facilitate internal healing after a surgery or an illness. Examples of essential oils that can speed up healing processes are rosehip, calendula, lavender and buckthorn.

Recent studies have observed reduced headache after applying peppermint oil with lavender oil.

  • Healthy Hairs

Essential oils are a great substitute for hair care. Peppermint oil is effective in treating both greasy and dry hair. It helps in improving blood flow to the areas of the scalp. Lavender essential oil helps in deeply conditioning the hair, keeps it shiny and works to control dandruff.

  • Skin Nourishment

Essential oils heal damaged skin and provide deep nourishment. Lavender oil and tea tree oil have anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce the irritation and inflammation associated with skin conditions such as acne, eczema, burn, or insect bite. It alleviates wrinkles hence improves skin appearance.
